10 am in Germany, somewhere in the middle of nowhere between Hildesheim und Nordstemmen, we are 80 people ready to fight.
While Annika has to go again, as all the bananas are already empty, the highland-cows are grazing on the meadows still wet with dew, you guys are trying to form a line, which is the first challenge on this weekend, but not the last one you will overcome.
Julian instructs and then we start with the basics, after Marcus had warmed you up with functional fighter fitness. Punches, kicks und knife defense is on the program. Short break and Annika has to go buy groceries again – we completely underestimated what it means to feed hungry fighters. 😉
The next topic is on the schedule: Defense against thrusting and impact weapons. The teaching always follows a particular order – like always when it comes to Krav Maga. The problem is explained based on examples and the attack is shown. As Krav Maga is first of all about prevention, it is represented how one can avoid the attack preventively. Afterwards there´s the demonstration – where you, the students, are called into action. Eventually the technique is explained based on the single check points, meaning those points that are important to implement the technique. One trains the respective points one after the other then until the final stress drill, where one has to apply the techniques under pressure and stress.
After three hours of intensive training, there´s pasta by the ton and again you are hungry and we can´t keep up. Still at one point you all are full and rested and we go on with the defense against chains. As we don´t want you to have more pain than you will already have after a full weekend of Krav Maga, we use plastic instead of steel. The scenarios Julian explains, might sound unrealistic, but that´s not what it all is about. On the one hand it is about seeing things from the situation´s perspective, on the other about training your inner reflexes so that you are able to apply self-defense in any situation possible. In the end it´s about you being safe.
That why afterwards Sebastian shows you the defense against firearms. To get used to the topic and the techniques, you have to throw water bottles – that some of you get wet, really doesn´t matter as the sun is shining and it´s fun for you anyways.
As we don´t want the explanations to be too abstract, we show you a short video from Israel, where Tamir Gilad, one of the G.I.T.s of the IKMF, is doing shooting training with Julian. Particularly as you are allowed to shoot yourself under the supervision of Andy and Sebastian – but first the final drill.
While you are still shooting, Günther is already taking care of the barbecue. “Man made fire,” is what he says while he is pounding on his chest. If it´s about meat, the primal instincts will be back!
It´s time for relaxation with barbecue and beer and later with reggae and bonfire, while the last sweets make the circuit. You were thinking that´s it for the day? Well sorry, but we got to disappoint you…
The low light conditions and possibilities to hide around the camp have to be used. So multiple-attacker-night-parcour and seriously…we wonder where you take that power from. The attackers have to suffer quite a bit and some of you still have the same strike capability like in the mornings – we bow to you for having so much punch and endurance. You guys are proper warriors!
The night is short and that´s something everyone feels the next morning. Either it was too cold in the barn, the floor to hard or Max was snoring that loud that you have not slept a wink. Other than that Roxy had to rescue you as someone locked up the gate, which is not the best idea, when you got to go pee in the middle of the night due to beers. 😀
Still…the majority of you is already on their feed at 8 am and actually not just standing on the feed, but running. Good-morning-fighter-fitness is how Marcus calls it or like he says: “Running is only for relaxation.” Even if most of you say the training is more torture than relaxation. Specifically due to that…you do have our full respect.
After an extensive breakfast ground fighting is on and you are still on fire. Afterwards the final stress drill. This is where you apply everything you´ve learned during the weekend and the attackers have to take hits and take hits and take hits. Especially the girls are hard to handle – no one should come too close to Nia our youngest participant.
After parking all the cars more or less smartly on the camp ground, the last topic is on: Car Defense – the defense in and around the car. Julian shows the different scenarios. Be it the defense around the car, where someone is threatening you with a knife or an attack in the car where you take someone with you for instance and this person tries to strangulate you with a belt.
Slowly but surely one can feel the effort of the last two days, but you are still fighting! That´s why all of you get a well deserved certificate, our respect and the applause of every single participant in the end. You are real warriors, no survivors!
Coming to an end we want to say thank you again: First of all to all of you as you were great and travelled all along Germany to spent the weekend with us. Thanks to all the instructors as you also had to work concentrated for 48 h and a special thanks to all the other helping hands – Pia and Gerald, who provided us with a constant supply of coffee, cakes and warm food and Annika, who spent like a whole week at checkouts of the supermarktes around. Thanks to all, who helped with buildup and removal and sacrificed their leisure time and thanks to Mario and Jan, who made the area and their home available to us.
We hope, you had as much fun as we did and we will see you next year!
